As you’ll see in other pages of this blog, most of our holiday destinations are inland – trekking or visiting ancient cities. It doesn’t mean that we don’t have aspirations for a beautiful beach. The thing is I’m very bad at lying down on a couch and doing nothing, but we decided to do it during our summer vacation this year.
We traveled to Lissenung Island in Papua New Guinea – a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s just the size of a playing at my high school. It holds 7 cottages, without AC, TV, and telephone lines. We stayed there for 4 days to do nothing but enjoy the beach!
Sailing on the deep blue ocean during the 20-min trip from Kavieng
Lissenung Island is 20 minutes away from Kavieng, the capital of the Papua New Guinean province of New Ireland, which is 1.5 hours by airplane from Port Moresby. We were already excited by the beautiful ocean we could see from the airplane, but when we saw it there in front of us, it was too beautiful to feel it was real. I even felt scared about being drawn into the deep blue ocean.
When we stepped onto the island, we enjoyed another amazing view. The beach is more beautiful than any other beach that we’ve ever visited before.
On the first day, we spent time relaxing on the beach till the sky turned pinkish.
In the evening, there was nothing to distract us – no music, no radio, and no internet. We spent the time reading books, and when we felt sleepy, went back to the cottage to sleep till the sunlight came into the room.
Hopping around the other small islands in the Pacific Ocean
Lissenung Island is known as a gateway for 40+ diving sites, but we didn’t do this, instead, we chose snorkeling. About two-thirds of the island is surrounded by a beautiful reef that hosts 350+ different species of fish, as well as colorful coral. We spent the whole of the second day floating on the sea. On the third day, we stepped out from Lissenung Island and did some snorkeling at another tiny island, 20 minutes away by boat.
This is how clean the sea water is.
After snorkeling, we walked the coast-line and saw many beautiful shells, coral, and wildlife.
Here are some pictures to show how amazingly beautiful the sea is.

Awesome meals – freshly cooked with almost zero flavor, but tasty enough
We were happy with the meals served on the island too. The ingredients are so fresh and tasty that you won’t need any seasoning. During our last evening on the island, the owner prepared tapas served with fresh, gorgeous seafood.
These raw oysters were so fresh!
And that was the end of our 4 days on the island. Thanks to the beautiful beach and sea, time flew quickly, and we had to leave before I could get bored with doing nothing on the beach. This is the first island where I could just line on the beach and do nothing.
