Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a huge ocean wave. It’s a popular tourist destination in Western Australia by one-day trip from Perth. The landscapes on the way to Wave Rock are also amazing, and make it a worthwhile one-day trip from Perth.
The amazing views on the way!
What kept catching my eye on the way to Wave Rock is the beautiful white-colored land. There are a number of salt lakes in the Wheatbelt Region, which are formed by the extremely low drainage profile of the land, where evaporation excessive. At a glance, it appears to be dead land, but it’s fascinate to observe that there are plenty of unique plants there, creating an interesting landscape.
You can explore more than Wave Rock
After the 4-hour drive, we reached Wave Rock. It’s 15 meters high and 110 meters long. The rock is colored with grey and brown stripes, which (according to a guide book) is due to the interaction of an alga and a fungus. It’s a granite cliff, which is hard, hence it takes time to erode. It’s said that it took a long time, around 2,700 million years, to shape it to how we see it today.
Here is how it looks. You can walk around the surface of Wave Rock, and you will find it to be indeed one, singular rock.
In the same park, there are several other rocks that are shaped in interesting ways. This is called “Hippo’s Yawn.”
This tree, Eucalyptus salubris (Gimlet), is one of the things that shapes the landscape of Western Australia. The orange-colored trunk shines beautifully at sunset.
Getting there: It’s 340 km south-east of Perth, which is a 4-hour long drive. (We joined a one-day tour from Perth.)
Time to be spent: It’ll be one-day trip from Perth to the park. You’ll spend 1-2 hours in the park.
