Rottnest Island, 20 km from Perth, is a pupular destination for a day trip. I decided to go immediately after reading in my guidebook that the island is full of wildlife – clear ocean, white-sand beaches, pinkish salt lakes, and cute Quokkas (said to be a model for Pokemon!).
Riding a bicycle around the coast line
There are so many activities on offer on the island: cycling, snorkeling, or just relaxing on the beaches. Since I had only one day, I chose to go cycling. The road is well designed for cyclists to be able to enjoy wonderful views all along the coastline!
Non-stop wonderful views along the way!
No words are needed to describe how beautiful this island is. Here are some photos from along the cycling road.
White-sand beaches that go on and on. The ocean is a beautiful turquoise-color.
As I rode further, I realized that the island is surrounded by beautiful coral reef all the way.
Another amazing view on the island, which seems to be mentioned less frequently in guidebooks, is the red-, pink-, and orange-colored salt lakes.
Meet the model for Pokemon, the Quokka!
It’s not hard to spot Quokkas! If there’s bush and many small stone-like poos, you’re guaranteed to see some quokkas.
Getting there: It’s 20 km from Perth and a 25-min ferry ride from Fremantle or a 45-min ferry ride from Perth.
How long to spend there: As many days as you want! It’s also possible to fully enjoy the island on a one-day trip from Perth/Fremantle.
