Fremantle is a major Australian port city in Western Australia. It’s 20 km away from Perth and a 40-min train ride. The town is surrounded by the beautiful beach, and is renowned for its well-preserved 19th century buildings. Coming from the Fremantle Station towards the market, you’ll see randomly scattered yellow paint on the pretty historic buildings in High Street. Even the clock tower of Town Hall has this odd paint on it. A local gentleman walking in the street told me to go to the Round House to figure it out.
Getting closer to Round House, the pieces began looking like curves. Those curving lines appear to generate a random pattern. Still I had no clue about what it is.
Climbing up the small hill of the Round House, as suggested by the gentleman, looking back the street from the hill, you’ll see the multiple yellow ellipses go down in the entire street. This work called Arcs d’Éllipses, is the work of Paris-based Swiss artist Felice Varini, who has produced many such geometric optical illusions around the world.
You’ll find many other instances of such street art in the town. Some of them are chic, others are pop and fun. It’s something to enjoy while walking down the streets of Fremantle.
