You may not think there is much to link Thai cuisine and German beer. Yet that’s exactly this restaurant, Tawandang Microbrewery, combine in their menu! It’s located in the corner of Dempsey Hill, which is full of lush greenery and is home to some great eateries and shops.
I’d been aware of the restaurant for a long time but never thought to try it, probably because of the unusual pairing of the two concepts – Thai cuisine and German beer. However, I found it be another amazing microbrewery in the town after popping in one evening following dinner in Dempsey Hill.
They serve freshly brewed German beer with Thai food. They also have live music in the evening, making you feel as though you’re in the nightlife of downtown Bangkok. But frankly speaking, this is THE place for beer. The great fresh beer alone make it worth a visit. The best time to enjoy this place is afternoon on the weekend. This is a quieter time, leaving you to chill with a glass of beer amid the lush greenery of Dempsey Hill.
They offer three signature German beers – Lager, Dunkel, and Weizen. They never change the menu or add any seasonal options, which serves as proof of their confidence in the continued appeal of these three varieties and is one of the many things I like about this microbrewery. They state that the beer is made from high-quality ingredients and brewed on-site with materials imported from Germany by a professional brewer.
On your first visit, try Lager, which is the best-selling at Tawandang. Golden in color and with a mild taste, the fresh, pleasant aroma of hops will soothe your throat in the hot and humid climate of Singapore.
Weizen is another good choice if you’re a white beer lover. Made of malted barley and aromatic hops, it has a lovely, fruity fragrance with a fine and creamy foam on top.
On a weekend afternoon, there are always visitors who come here to chill and quietly chat over a glass of beer. The friendly staff, who are also relaxed at this time of the day compared to their busier evenings, always ready to swap your lukewarm glass for a new, frozen one – another great thing about this restaurant.
