This month, April 2019, marks my 8 years since I moved to Singapore to live. Brewerkz, the longest-running craft brewery in Singapore, is the pub where have visited most frequently over the past eight years. It’s one of a few microbreweries to have offered beer brewed on site since before microbreweries became trendy in Singapore.
Many reason to try Brewerkz
There are many things I like about Brewerkz Riverside Point. Their craft beer is good. They also have various seasonal flavors, which makes it exciting whenever you visit. It’s a pub, but the casual ambience creates a cozy feeling. It’s also a sport bar and can quickly develop a festive vibe as people come together to watch a big match – football, rugby, F1, golf or baseball.
The pretty beer-guide posters on the wall help to gradually expand your knowledge of beer. Notably, Brewerkz Riverside Point has a choice of the air-conditioned indoor tables or outdoor tables with a view over Clarke Quay and its row of pretty shophouses
My favorite thing to do there is to sit down at one of the high tables on a weekend afternoon, grab a glass of beer, and chill while reading a book. The level of busyness is just right – some people some people chill, like us, while others watch a game or have a chat quietly.
It’s also a good place for after-work drinks. I often come here when friends or business partners visit Singapore and we want to have a casual catch-up chat.
Must-try flavors
Their list of beers includes the Signature Series and Seasonal Flavors.
The Signature Series include Golden Ale, the best-selling beer, India Pale Ale, Bohemian Pilsner, and Oatmeal Stout. On your first visit, start with Golden Ale and enjoy the clean but rich maltiness of a hint of bitterness.
Overall, the beers in the Seasonal Flavors Series tend to have a citrus spiciness, which could be influenced by US craft beer.
Of the seasonal flavors, the Wheat Beer is a must-try, although this may be named differently depending on the hints of seasonal flavor added when you visit. It’s cloudy-yellow, and is not too sweet, with a perfect balance of hops and malty sweetness.
Another seasonal flavor that I really miss is the Apricot Ale. While it had a rich aroma of apricot, the tartness of the fruit would offset the sweetness nicely, and the malt backbone gave it a crisp taste. I really hope they bring this one back in the future!
The best accompaniment of beer at Brewerkz
Their dishes they serve are pretty much American in style – fries, burgers, BBQ, pizza, etc., while others are Asian-inspired. And every dish is huge! If you’re there just for some chill time, then their small-sized Pizza and Sweet Potato Fries would be just right accompaniment.
While food reviews rarely mention their pizza, it’s very special. One time I asked a member of staff about the secret of their pizza dough, and he proudly talked about their special dough and put the bill on the house that day! They make the pizza grains used in their Oatmeal Stout, which givs it a solid whole-wheat taste and makes the crust be tasty, thick and crisp.
The sweet potato fries is crisp on outside and moist on inside. They’re far too good to stop eating!
The cozy and fun ambience
The interior of Brewerks also helps in creating a ambience. The long corridor to the rest room is lined with humorous posters and the pretty pictorial diagram that helps to build your beer knowledge.
They really love sports at the restaurant and decorate the interior with flags or posters whenever there is a big match on. People gather together and have great fun, both friend and foe alike!
They’re always part of local celebration or event in their own way too, which means they are well-loved by Singapore’s residents. So when you’re in Singapore, make a point of visiting Brewerkz for those special beers!
There are several outlets in the city. The branch I like most, for its ambience, is the one at Riverside Point.
Brewerkz Riverside Point: 30 Merchant Road, #01-07 Riverside Point, Singapore 058282
Getting there: It’s 5 min walk from Fort Canning MRT Station or 7 min walk from Clarke Quay MRT Station. It’s a 10 to 15 min drive from Orchard.
