York is the oldest settlement in Western Australia. It’s about 100 km east of Perth. If you go on a day tour to Wave Rock, the bus will stop there on the way. It’s a small, quiet town, meaning it only takes 30 minutes to walk around the main street or 1 hour maximum if you decide to stop at a cafe and sip on a coffee.
It’s lovely that the sign shows specific places like this!
The main street, which is only around 1 km long, is lined with well-maintained buildings in the Federation Classical and Victorian styles. They evoke the 19th century. This is the most iconic building, the York Town Hall, built in 1911 in the Federation Free Classical style.
You’ll come across many lovely buildings, including the 150-year-old Castle Hotel that is said to have exactly the same today as when it was built, the only pub in the town, the post office, with a classic mailing box standing outside, and the single-story fire station.
Getting there: It’s about 100 km away from Perth and on the way to Wave Rock.
How long to spend there: 30 minutes is enough to quickly cover the key highlights.
