[Trekking with a kid] The Furepe Waterfall Nature Walk in Shiretoko, Hokkaido in Japan, was the most beautiful trail we explored this year. From misty paths surrounded by low trees and shrubs to open grasslands dotted with flowers and panoramic views of the majestic Shiretoko mountain range, every moment felt like a scene from a movie.
While we, adults soaked in the cinematic beauty of the trail, our son wasn’t as enthusiastic about walking that day. He spent a good portion of the journey perched on his father’s shoulders. Even so, I strongly recommend this trail for families with children. If you ever visit Shiretoko in Hokkaido, Japan, this nature walk is a must.

Kid’s age: 2 years and 7 months
Walking pace of the kid: One third of an average adult’s speed
Distance walked by the kid: About half of the total trip on foot
Easiness for kids: ★★★★★
Mood of the kid on the day: ★★☆☆☆
Departing from the Shiretoko Nature Center
The trail begins with a gentle downhill stretch of 400 meters from the Shiretoko Nature Center. The log steps are perfectly sized for little feet to climb with ease.
Unfortunately, our son wasn’t motivated to walk right from the start, and quickly pleaded, “Carry me please!” Our family motto is to nurture a love for trekking rather than enforce, so we honored his request.

Soon, the forest of low trees opened into a sweeping grassland. Mist swirled around us, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that felt like walking through clouds. When I asked my son, “Doesn’t feel like we’re in a cloud?” his curiosity sparked and he decided to walk.
The trail from here to the observation deck was flat and easy, making it a perfect stretch for little ones to explore.

The misty world lasted for about 15 minutes before giving way to a bright, clear, sunny day!

Arriving at the Furepe Waterfall Observation Deck
After the pleasant 30-minute walk from the Shiretoko Nature Center, we arrived at the Furepe Waterfall Observation Deck. The sight of the waterfall cascading from a steep cliff into the Sea of Okhostck was spectacular. The deep blue sea stretched endlessly beyond the waterfall.
In fact, the waterfall is only visible if you lean forward. Naturally, our kid couldn’t see it (and that’s ok!). Instead, we turned the stop into an opportunity for snack time, something he had been eagerly looking forward to.

The stunning return journey
During our journey back, the weather was absolutely beautiful. The grasslands came alive with blooming flowers, and the Shiretoko mountain range stood magnificently in the background. I could never have imagined a trail as stunningly perfect as this one.
As for our kid… he once again requested, “Carry me, please!” and spent the entire return journey happily on his dad’s shoulders.

The Furepe Waterfall Nature Walk in Shiretoko, Hokkaido in Japan, is highly recommended for both adults and children alike thanks to its flat, easy trail and breathtaking views along the way. Even if your child isn’t in the mood to walk, the gentle terrain makes it manageable to carry them throughout the journey.
