The town surrounded by the beautiful beach, is renowned for its well-preserved 19th century buildings. It’s ideal if you can spend a day here. There are many things to do – strolling in the streets enjoying the pretty colonial buildings, visiting historic places, cafe/brewery hopping, shopping at local markets where you can find local souvenirs, etc.
Don’t worry if you’re in a rush. It’s a small town, so you can complete the must-visit list in half a day.
Must-visit historical places first
Fremantle was the first area settled by the colonists in 1829. If you’re interested in the history of Australia, visit historic places such as Western Australia Maritime Museum, the Roundhouse (one of the first permanent buildings from the 19th century, that was used for prisoners until 1886) and Fremantle Prison, which is registered as UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site. At the Roundhouse, as of 2018, you’ll find a fascinating street art that entirely occupies High Street.
You shouldn’t miss Fremantle Town Hall, located in the center of the town. It was opened in 1887, and it is still used as a concert hall and hosts wedding ceremonies. After several rounds of maintenance and renovation, it still holds its original grandeur, which originated from Victorian Gothic style of classical architecture.
Visiting Freemantle Markets to discover local foods and crafts
Fremantle Market is another tourist destination. It’s open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and most public holidays. Its building dates back to 1897 and currently features around 150 shops. You’ll find not only local fresh fruits and vegetables, but also interesting souvenirs and crafts that local, talented artists produce.
In front of the entrance on weekends, musicians, acrobats, jugglers, and comedians keep attracting the attention of people on the streets.
